Drama

Drama is offered in Our Lady’s as an extracurricular activity and as a year long module in Transition year. There is a Drama Club led by Ms. Hughes and Ms. Mason. It is open to all junior students and meets once a week in the concert hall. Previous productions include The Grinch in 2018 and Scrooge in 2016. Drama club also performs at many school events such as the Christmas reflection and the end of year Awards Night. Drama Club links with the local community and has performed at Fair Day and visited residents of St. Mary’s to recite poetry and perform short sketches. Skills developed in Drama Club such as public speaking, decision making, communication and cooperation transfer into school life and have helped many students with their CBAs for Junior Cycle and noted on their Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement. Drama Club is open to anybody who is interested in performing, writing and costume/prop design.

In Transition Year Drama is a year-long module where all aspects of Drama are looked at such as performing, writing, directing/producing and costume and set design. The Drama module performs every year at TY Awards Night where they showcase the work they’ve done throughout the year. In recent years the TY Drama module have written and performed their own piece. TY mentors also assist with the Drama club.

The highlight of Drama in Our Lady’s is the highly anticipated biannual musical which is open to 4th and 5th years and is directed and produced by Ms. Murray, Ms. Mason and Ms. Hughes. Previous productions include Loserville 2019, Bring It On 2017, The Wedding Singer 2015. The musical involves over 100 students from across the two year groups to showcase all the many talents they have including acting, singing, dancing, playing instruments, set design, costume and make-up not to mention those involved in the production of the musical from lights to sound technicians, backstage members, promotion and programme designers. The Musical had to be postponed during Covid times but students and staff are making plans for the return of the school musical for the school year 2022/23.
