Congratulations to the talented Transition Year students from Our Lady’s Secondary School who qualified for the national finals of the prestigious Junk Kouture competition. Junk Kouture is a national competition that challenges young people to create outfits using recycled materials. The competition is designed to inspire and encourage young people to think creatively and sustainably about fashion, and to promote awareness about the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry. In recent years Our Lady’s Secondary School introduced Junk Kouture as part of their modules in Transition Year and this year they had four entries who qualified for the Northern Regional Final. There was great excitement in the school on Thursday afternoon when it was announced that one of the entries ‘ Lioness of OLSS’ by Ella Mackie, Isabella Lee and Rachel Cassidy qualified for the national finals of this prestigious competition. The theme of the girl’s entry is to highlight awareness of animal cruelty, mainly towards lions and in designing and making the outfit the girls used moss, leaves, horse hair, twigs, pinecones, old curtain fabric, old bed sheet, old wire, toilet rolls, cardboard, old book pages and recycled paper.
Speaking at the school during the week Mr. Kelly extended his congratulations to the students and their Art teacher Ms. Mc Ardle commenting that ‘our Transition Year students have demonstrated exceptional imagination and talent in designing outfits for this competition. They have worked tirelessly to source recycled materials and transform them into unique, beautiful, and sustainable fashion pieces. The fact that our students have qualified for the national finals of the Junk Kouture competition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of their teacher Ms. Mc Ardle who has supported and encouraged the students throughout the process. It is also a testament to the creativity and determination of our students who have embraced the challenge and as always have risen to the occasion.’
