Prestigious Queen’s University Football Future Stars for Our Lady’s Castleblayney

Gaelic Games in Our Lady’s Secondary School Castleblayney received a great boost when it was announced that Jamie Mooney was selected as Goalkeeper on the Queen’s University Football Future Stars team of 2022. Jamie attended an initial trial in Cookstown on Tuesday March 29th and was selected to compete in a final trial game on Wednesday April 6th in Belfast. Throughout both games Jamie displayed his excellent goalkeeping skill and ability, with accurate Kickouts and excellent shot stopping. There was great excitement in school on the announcement that Jamie had been selected on the team.

Jamie is the son of Brendan and Marguerite Mooney and he plays his club football with the Cremartin Shamrocks GAA Club winning a number of underage titles. Jamie has been a member of Co. Monaghan Development Squads the past few years and a key member of the schools Rannafast team and MacLarnon squad. Jamie played in a key role in the schools run to the Rannafast Semi Final with wins over St. Colman’s Newry and St. Pat’s Armagh. His coaches from the Rannafast Squad, Mr. O’Boyle and Mr. Lyons were both extremely impressed with his performances during their historic campaign where the school won their first competitive game at Ulster Schools ‘A’ Level. He was also a member of the MacLarnon Cup panel who reached this year’s final.

This is Our Lady’s second Queen’s Football Future Star award after Jason Irwin’s (Oram) award in 2017. Speaking at the school during the week Principal Mr. Kelly who also coaches the Senior Boys football congratulated Jamie on his outstanding achievement ‘this is a fantastic honour for Jamie and our school and one of which we in Our Lady’s are extremely proud. Jamie has a wonderful interest in and passion for Gaelic Games and I am delighted that the skill and commitment that we see on a daily basis has been recognised at such a prestigious level. I have no doubt that with continued hard work and application that Jamie has a great future ahead of him in Gaelic Games. The high levels of success we have enjoyed in GAA in recent years is a testimony to the talent and ability of our students but also to the great work done by all teachers involved in coaching & promoting Gaelic Games in our school’
