In a momentous occasion marking student growth, development and achievement as well as the enduring legacy of Mr. Gerald F. Gillanders, Hazel Hughes, a Sixth Year student, has been bestowed with the esteemed Gerald F. Gillanders Student of the Year Award for 2024. This accolade, now in its 39th year, is a tribute to outstanding students who embody the spirit of leadership, compassion and dedication within Our Lady’s school community.

The ceremony, held on May 15th was attended by students, staff, retired staff, previous recipients of the award, representatives from the Board of Management and Tom Gillanders, representing the Gillanders family. Indeed, this year’s ceremony was a poignant commemoration as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of the passing of Mr. Gillanders, who served as Deputy Principal of Our Lady’s until his untimely death in 1984

Principal Mr. Eddie Kelly, in his address during the ceremony commented on Hazel's exceptional character and her positive influence on her peers. He remarked, "Hazel is an exceptional young person and an exemplary role model for her peers and younger students in the school. Hazel’s commitment to all aspects of school life has been unwavering; she is a pleasant, caring, and diligent student who displays a profound respect and gratitude for the support and opportunities she receives."

Mr. Kelly further expressed gratitude to all eight nominees for their significant contributions to the school community over the past six years, emphasising the pride felt by the management and staff towards Hazel and her classmates in the Leaving Certificate class of 2024. As they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives, the school extends heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all students in the Leaving Certificate Class of 2024.
